There’s a certain magic to race day. Months of training culminate in that single moment when you toe the starting line, a mix of nerves and excitement coursing through your veins. Back in August 2016, I participated in the Peaks and Trails 26km event in Dunkeld. My goal? Crush that sub-3-hour mark.
As the race unfolded, I gave it my all, pushing myself on those challenging climbs and relishing the descents. While I didn’t quite hit my ambitious time target, crossing the finish line in 3 hours and 18 minutes left me feeling accomplished. Then came the surprise – I was informed I’d snagged second place!
Now, here’s the twist: apparently, the race’s usual frontrunners were absent that day. It wasn’t a victory built on blazing speed, but on something far more fundamental – simply showing up.
There’s a powerful lesson in that. We often get caught up in chasing lofty goals, striving to be the fastest, the strongest, the most whatever. But sometimes, the greatest accomplishment lies in the act of showing up itself.
Showing Up for Yourself
Showing up means being present, and being there for yourself. It’s about putting in the effort, about lacing up your shoes and hitting the pavement, even when you don’t feel like it. It’s the commitment to self-improvement, the dedication to the journey, not just the destination.
Showing Up for Others
Showing up goes beyond personal goals. It’s about being reliable, being there for friends, family, and teammates. It’s about showing your support, being someone people can count on, through thick and thin.
The Unexpected Rewards
Like my unexpected podium finish, showing up often leads to unforeseen rewards. Maybe you meet inspiring people you wouldn’t have otherwise encountered. Perhaps you discover hidden strengths within yourself. The beauty lies in the unknown, the possibilities that unfold when you simply commit to being present.
So, what does showing up look like for you?
Is it finally signing up for that race you’ve been eyeing? Joining a new club or class? Simply making that phone call to a friend in need? The world rewards those who show up, who take that first step, who embrace the journey.
Remember, even if you don’t snag the gold medal, the simple act of showing up is a victory in itself. It’s a testament to your commitment, your resilience, and your dedication to being your best self. Now get out there and show up for yourself, for your goals, and for the amazing things that await!
