Stay Safe on Your Runs: Tips for Every Runner

Running is a fantastic way to stay healthy and explore your surroundings. Back in 2016, I wrote a post on Ways to be a Safe Runner. But as the recent disappearance of Samantha Murphy, a Ballarat mum, tragically reminds us, safety is paramount.

Here are some key tips to ensure you have a safe and enjoyable run, no matter the time of day:

Let Someone Know Your Plans

Before you head out, always tell a trusted friend, family member, or housemate where you’re going and for how long. This way, someone knows to raise the alarm if you’re unexpectedly delayed.

Run with Technology

Utilize tracking apps like Find My Phone, Strava Beacon, or Sonder. These allow loved ones to see your location in real time, providing peace of mind.

Strength in Numbers

Consider joining a running group or running with friends. Not only is it more motivating, but having others around enhances safety, especially on isolated paths.

Mix it Up

Avoid becoming predictable. Switch up your running routes and days to make it harder for anyone to anticipate your movements.

Be Aware of Your Surroundings

Ditch the headphones, especially in low-light conditions. This allows you to stay alert to traffic and your surroundings.

High-Vis for Low-Light

During dawn, dusk, or nighttime runs, wear brightly coloured clothing with reflective gear. This ensures you’re visible to drivers and others.

Light Up the Night

Invest in a headlamp for nighttime runs. It provides better visibility for you and helps others see you on the path.

Following these simple tips, you can minimize risks and ensure your runs are a source of enjoyment and well-being. Remember, safety isn’t about being paranoid, it’s about being prepared. Now go out there and have a great run!
