With Christmas fast approaching, I thought I would do something a little different for High Five Friday.
Stuck on what to get your running mum, dad, sister, brother, friend?
Don’t worry friend, I’ve got you covered with these 5 suggestions for not only the roadrunner but for the trail runner out there too.
Road Runner’s Gift Guide
.1. Entry into an event
Every runner I know has a run bucket list.
We all have a list of runs that we want to enter, but for whatever reason don’t have the time or can’t afford to do.
By buying them an entry into an event, you can be guaranteed that it will be an experience they will never forget.
.2. Race Belt
No more safety pins are required with a race belt.
If your special one loves races, then one of these bad boys is a must. There are so many different varieties now, but they work a treat.
An alternative is race bib clips. They are like press studs that you attach your bib to your clothing.
The advantages with a race belt are that you can get styles that will fit your phone, fuel and a drink bottle.
My UltrAspire Quantum belt has been used for multiple events and training runs and hasn’t failed me yet.
.3. Running Fuel
Does your running special one have a longer distance on the horizon?
Maybe they are training for a marathon or an ultra. If so, then they will be considering taking on fuel during their long runs and during their event.
Fueling options could be:
.4. Socks
Every runner has a brand of favourite socks. From Injiji’s, Thorlo’s, Light Feet, to Pro Compression, a runner is always grateful for a new pair of socks.
Their feet will thank you.
.5. Thir/Headsock/Buff
This tubal bit of fabric is so versatile.
Primarily used more in winter, this multi-functional headpiece will keep your head and ears warm.
As a woman, I love them because they keep flyaway hairs in check, and I can still wear a ponytail.
They come in fun funky styles and colours, no runner should be without one.
You can use them as a beanie, headband, balaclava, or even a hankie.
Trail Runners Gift Guide
If you are like me and love trail running, then I’d recommend these additional items.
.1. Hydration Pack
If your running loved one is running an ultra, then a hydration pack is a must.
Considering these additional things when choosing a pack
- Size
- Hydration Capacity
- Fit
- Separate compartments
.2. Poles
Poles help assist in propelling you further, reduce impact, and thus save energy for the long runs/hikes up the mountainside.
Look for poles that fold in on themselves and are lightweight.
.3. Backpack
Unlike a hydration pack, this pack is to carry all the things you’ll need on race day.
- Wallet
- Phone
- Change of clothes
- After race shoes
- Food
- Water
It will be something they will use over and over again.
.4. Waterproof Jacket
Most ultra events will require a waterproof and windproof jacket as part of their mandatory gear.
You can read my waterproof jacket guide here.
.5. Headlamp
A headlamp is a must for any runner who wants their world to be lit up on their nocturnal adventures.
Look for the following:
- Lumens
- Rechargeable battery
That’s it. That’s my guide for any road and trail runner.
Now before you ask, what about a watch? Well, I find watches a very personal thing. Your loved one will know what watch they are interested in. If you can do the secret squirrel business and purchase it without them knowing kudos to you.
Otherwise, check out DC Rainmaker, he reviews every sports watch under the sun and will be able you give you a more informed choice.
