Why it’s ok to Fail

I’ve noticed lately there seems to be a development going around on “failure is not an option”.

I’ve seen it a lot in the ‘weightloss’ community.  But I’ve also seen it in a lot of obstacle race / crossfit events.

Society has now instilled a fear in failure.

Failure isn’t wrong.  It’s ok, and here are 3 reasons why it’s ok to fail.

Learn from Failure

Life isn’t easy.  Life gives us challenges, and with those challenges will come many failures.

When was the last time you really learned what you were capable of? I guarantee you it was on the brink of failure.

You may have failed. So what, failure shouldn’t stop you, failure only makes you stronger.

Did Thomas Edison perfect his light globe on attempt one? No.  He failed over 1,000 times more before those failures help create what we now use everyday.

Learn from your failures, they will teach what you are capable of.

Failure makes you stronger

In the body building / weight lifting world you will hear the term “training to failure”.

This type of failure occurs during the lifting phase of a repetition.  It happens when your muscles can’t product enough force to continual move the weight.

Yet even in the weight lifting world you don’t train to failure at every set.  You do however incorporate it into your workout regime.

I’ve been including some “sets to failure” in my weight lifting workout, and while it is hard, it makes me realise that I’m stronger than I think.  It helps me to push myself further.

Failure makes you stronger and more resilient.

If you never Fail, You never Tried.

Yoda tells Luke “Do or do not, there is no try”.  Well I’m no Jedi, but I can tell you if I never try, how will I know what I’m capable of?

It is better to try and fail, than not try at all.

FEAR has a lot to say in us trying. For some it’s the fear of the unknown.  Others the fear of making a mistake.  Then there is the fear of what others will think.

Let go of the dogma, the fear and embrace failure.

Be liberate to go out there and try, and have fun while you’re at it too.

When was the last time you failed at something?
What did you learn from it?

  1. Love, love this post!!!!! I SOOOO agree with you on this! I like to tell people the only time you really fail is when you don’t try in the first place (I heard that somewhere years ago, I didn’t make it up myself.) But it’s true, life is meant to be experinced and failure is a part of that. If we don’t fail, we will never learn!
I fail at things all the time, but that is half the fun because it just drives me to want to find new ways, and give it another go!

    1. So glad you love this post. And yes I totally agree with you failure and mistakes are a part of life, they shape us, and without them we don’t know what we are capable of.
Besides if you want something bad enough, you don’t give up, sure you might have to go the long way around, but you get there.

  2. To fail means you’ve tried, the important thing is to get back up again and try again, otherwise it’s a real fail. We learn, we adapt and we overcome. It’s all good.
