Out of all the romance tropes in the world, the “accidental pregnancy” one is probably my least favourite. It’s not that I hate it, but the story can often feel a bit predictable, with only one clear path it can take. So, when I stumbled upon Hannah Bonam-Young’s Out on a Limb for the bargain price of $1.99, I’ll be honest, I was hesitant. Little did I know, this book was about to completely change my perspective.

This was my first time reading anything by Hannah Bonam-Young, but it certainly won’t be my last. From the very start, it was clear that this book was so much more than just an accidental pregnancy story. The main characters, Win and Bo, both have a limb difference. Win has a small, stumpy hand, and at her best friend’s Halloween party, she wears a pirate hook, a fitting costume for a pirate with a “small hand.” That’s where she meets Bo, who is also dressed as a pirate, his wooden leg being a perfectly appropriate prop for his character.

What starts as a fun Halloween “hook-up” ends up being a little bit extra. As the two main characters work through their unexpected pregnancy together, they not only learn about each other, but they also truly fall in love. The book was a genuine delight to read. It was cute, it was funny, and it was so clear that Win and Bo were meant to be together.

I totally loved this one. It was a charming surprise that took a tired trope and infused it with heart, humour, and a refreshing sense of realness. If you’re looking for a heartwarming read that is so much more than what it seems on the surface, this is the book for you.
