There are Runcations, where you specifically go to a location for a run and then have a holiday.
Then there are holidays, and there just happens to be run on when you are there.
Latter was the case with the Camel to Club fun run.
Last year we left Bermagui on the day that the event took place. This year circumstances were different and we happened to be there when it was on.
This event is over 2 days during the last weekend of September.
There are running, as well as surf and swimming events. You can also participate in yoga, tai-chi, and other well-being programs.
While I can swim, I’m not a strong surf swimmer. Instead, I chose to run the 7km Camel to Club fun run.
A one-way course we took a bus out to the start line, about 200m from Camel Rock.
The first 1.5km of this run was all on soft sand, and it was all kinds of awful. It was that soft sinking sand that made every step feel like you were dragging your feet through cement.
I was so happy to get off the beach and to run on the old Tilba road.
This road was the old thoroughfare to get from Tilba to Bermagui. When Wallaga Lake road was built, this thoroughfare was converted to a walking track. This was the track that we took back into town.
With the beach on one side and wetlands on the other side, you were just immersed in beauty.

The sand running took a lot out of me. My legs still felt heavy from running Surf Coast Century just a week prior. Yet I was still able to keep a consistent pace, even though it felt hard as hard.
Crossing the line, I told myself if I do this event again, I’ll be choosing the 5k option, just so I don’t have to run on sand.
