Book Review: The Burnout

By Sophie Kinsella

Publication Date: October, 2023
Genre: Romance, Contemporary
Rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐

The Backdrop: Sophie Kinsella has always been my “must-read” author. Following her passing in late 2025, I wanted to honour her legacy the best way I knew how: by diving into a story I hadn’t yet discovered.

The Plot: Sasha and Finn are two corporate warriors who have officially hit a wall (in Sasha’s case, quite literally). They both retreat to a ramshackle seaside hotel from their childhood to recover, but “rest” isn’t exactly on the menu.

The Accidental Guru: Thanks to her mother’s over-sharing, Sasha is inadvertently dubbed a “wellness guru” by the locals. Despite being a total mess, she finds herself “leading” a mindfulness movement fueled by truly disgusting kale smoothies and vile Noni juice.

The Busted Moment: Enter Finn, a fellow burnt-out professional who is having none of it. While Sasha is faking Zen, Finn is busy drinking whiskey and getting pizza delivered to his cabin. He eventually busts her “guru” persona in the most hilarious, cringe-worthy way possible.

And we can not forget the battle over a literal rock on the beach.

Why I Loved It:

  • The Relatability: It’s a love letter to anyone who has ever felt “done” with the 9-to-5 grind.
  • The Laughs: From the decaying resort to the wellness misunderstandings, it’s classic Kinsella comedy.
  • The Heart: Watching Sasha and Finn reassess their lives while healing together is deeply touching.

The Verdict: A lovely, laugh-out-loud tribute to an author who spent her life making me smile. She truly was the master of finding humour in our most stressful moments.

The Verdict: A lovely, laugh-out-loud tribute to an author who knew exactly how to find the humour in our most stressful moments.

It was the perfect tribute to an author who spent her life making me smile.
