Behind the name

May-Button-Clairey

What’s in a name?

I’ve always loved my name.  Yes I know it’s very Aussie, but did you know that Matilda is not traditionally an Australian name?  It’s actually German.  It means Might & Battle.

My parents chose this name because it was different, it was Australian, but also it was pronounced the same in English and Spanish.

I’ve never met another Matilda my age before.  Yes there are lots of little Matilda’s, but still to this day (and I’ll be 34 in June), I’ve never met a Matilda that is around my age.  Why? I’m not too sure.

My daughter’s name is Kayla.  My son’s name is Miles.  I actually had the opposite sex name picked out first before we found out what we were having.

If Kayla were a boy, she’d have been a Caleb.
If Miles were a girl, he’d have been a Miley.

Future kids, not sure yet.

Just because a baby name book tells you the meaning of your name, doesn’t mean it describes you.

  1. This is a post that made me really think and realize I do love my name:) I actually have no idea what my name means, but I am intrigued to find out. They named me Kristy because my dad was a school teacher and he refused to name any of his kids with the same names of any of the bad/annoying/dumb kids, in case having a “bad kid name” meant we would turn out like the other delinquents that had the names, hahaha
Great post, I think it is so important to love yourself in every way, because your right that is it’s own kind of beauty!

  2. My name means listener which is kind of hysterical when you know how much I talk!!! It is part of my job, after all 😉

  3. I am thinking and thinking, but nope, can not think of another Matilda that is your age. I know one about 20 years old and I recall at her birth, it was still rare to use the name. Odd, because it is such a beautiful name.

  4. Congratulations you are the only Matilda I know too…great name post. Nice to “see” you in your photo x

  5. I like names that you don’t hear very often, Matilda being one of them. I do like my middle name, Elizabeth. It’s definitely more common than my first name, Martha. I only use my first name when I really have to because it’s my mom’s name too.

    1. I know quite a few people (my dad included) that uses their middle name over their first name.
but in your case it makes sense to use it. Elizabeth is such a classic strong name.
There was a girl in high school who hated her name, and rather be called Libby. I never understood how you got Libby from Elizabeth.
