Reasons why you should invest in a running coach

Whether you are new to running or a seasoned pro, there are many reasons why you should invest in a running coach.

When I first started running, I never thought about getting a coach.

I saw running as an item to be crossed off my goal list.

Crossing the 5.2km Run for the kid’s fun run in a respectable time of 28:14, I suddenly found myself hooked on running.

Yet, it still never occurred to me to get a running coach to help me on my running journey.

Instead, I followed some random training plan that I found online.

Sure following a random plan can get you to your running goals, but you’ll never know your full potential without getting feedback from a coach.

In 2016, I decided to invest in a coach for the 26km distance at Peaks & Trails, where I ended up placing 2nd.

Since then I have invested in a running coach and here are three reasons why you should too.

Three reasons to invest in a coach

Accountability

Investing in a coach not only keeps you accountable, but you’re more likely to have success because you’re investing in your own progress.

Being accountable to a coach means you are more likely to show up and set out to accomplish the things that you were told to do.

Structure

A coach is going to design a plan around you and your lifestyle.

They will find out:

  • Number of days you want to run
  • Time constraints with work and family
  • Strength training
  • Sessions you love and hate
  • Things that have worked in the past
  • Things that have failed in the past
  • High or low volume

With this information, a coach can construct a plan to get you to your goal.

Feedback

Having a coach gives you perspective.

They will dissect your run and give you feedback on where you can improve and where to pull back.

A coach can see the bigger picture when you’re knee-deep in training and questioning your life choices they will put your mind at ease.

Personally, I have loved having a running coach.

Without my running coach and her team over at Operation Move, I would never have gotten a personal best for the half marathon at the Australian Running Festival in 2018.

Run to Paradise would never have happened.

Shaving off 10 minutes for my 50km ultra earlier this year is also thanks to my coach and her trusty plans.

Now is the time to invest in you and make those dreams come true.
