High Five Friday: End of Week check in

(High Five Friday, before it was cool)

It’s been a bit of a topsy turvy week for me.

I guess what threw the scales off balance was having the SAAC club run on a Sunday.

See I do my long runs on a Monday. But because I had an 8km on Sunday, I didn’t exactly want to run 90mins on Monday. Thought I might give my legs some rest at least. The other fact was that after the club run on Sunday Tom and I did some paving. Which was awesome fun, but wow it made me Ms. I’m Pooped.

Monday ended up being pretty much just a faff around the house day, which was great, sometimes you just gotta have those days.

Tuesday we hopped in the car and headed out to Tom’s place which is in the Grampians. He dropped me off and I ran in.

My mission for this 90min run was to get a negative split. So I took it easy and just enjoyed the run. I had my phone with on this run (I don’t run with it). I was testing out a new system with my fuel belt. One water bottle and in a small case my phone. Hence the happy snaps. But I thought it would be nice to show you the track and my journey.

Pathetic shadow picture, but awesome track to run on.

See those Mountains, that’s where I was running too. I was only about 6.5km into my run at this stage.

I knew that I would do about 16km in those 90 minutes, so when I got to the 8km I looked at my watch to note the time 45:30 (it actually ended up being 43:21, so don’t ask me why or how I got that time).  I just kept running at a pace that I was comfortable with, it wasn’t until around the 10km mark that I decided to step it up a notch.

When I heard my watch beep at 16km I knew I had a negative split.  I wasn’t quite at 90 mins yet, so I knew I had it.  Yay!

Coming into the Home Stretch

The reason why I was aiming for a negative split was for a few reasons.

  1. I tend to go out too hard and fast and then end up with no fuel left in the tank.
  2. For that reason, if I go slow at the start, I have the energy to go faster at the end when it matters.
  3. Tells me I can get the time I want come RunMelbourne in 3 weeks time.

My 2nd 8km time was 42:12 if you are wondering. Overall I was just shy of 17km, and I ran that in 1h32m55s which I was very happy about.  I also felt really good after the run to, like I had more left in the tank, another awesome, means when the time comes for RunMelbourne I’ll be able to smash out a new personal best.

Are  you training for anything?
What are your goals for the month?
Fav song on the radio at the moment?

    1. I love the Grampians, I’m glad that I live so close to them, cause I get to run them regularly. The hills there make running in Melb a piece of cake.

  1. I’m currently training for a 5k, (short term) and half, (long term!)
My goals this month are to get in 9 miles every week.
Not sure what my fave song on the radio this week! I’ve listening to some of my old faves on CD. 🙂

  2. Hi Matilda!
I love the pictures of your run, it looked like perfect weather and a great track!
How do you like running with a running club? I have signed up to receive emails from a running club at my gym and haven’t officially joined yet. There is another really cool running club that I want to be a part of but just can’t get there. Maybe because they run in the evening and I prefer to run in the morning (especially during the school year, Im a teacher) but I think it would really help my running.
    Thanks!

    1. I’ve been lucky to have such great weather on my runs. It was a bit cool, but I’d rather that than roasting hot.
I actually really enjoy running with the club. It’s all based on handicap, so it really helps you to improve, and it’s also nice to be around other people who have a love of running too.
I too am a morning runner, and club run is normally 2pm on a Saturday, which I’ve only just gotten use to. I will still run in the evening if I have to, but I rather have it over and done with 1st thing. Surely there is another running club that does it during the morning or afternoon?

  3. Sounds like a successful training week despite the schedule difficulty! Negative-splitting is B-A so congrats in that as well!

I’m training for an Olympic Tri at the end of this month.

Favorite song on the radio now is Radioactive by Imagine Dragons. Can’t help it!
