Instant gratification

What is it with people wanting instant gratification?

Everyone wants things done now, no wait, yesterday.  People don’t realise that if it’s important, it’s going to take time.  You don’t rush into things, cause when you do you always seem to end up in some disaster.

Today I came across this article about weight loss.  Now how you do your weight loss is up to you and there are lots of different programs out there that you can use, I’m not going to tell you what one to use because that is your decision and not mine.  And what works for me, may not work for you.

Things I have learned on my journey are the following:

  • Know your numbers.  That means finding out what your BMR / TDEE / BMI is etc
  • Never eat below your BMR (this is my opinion, but I have personally found that if I eat less than 1500 calories a day, I tend to have major binge sessions cause I’m so hungry)
  • Eat half or all of your exercise calories back (I never use to, but now I do)

For about 3-4 months (after my overseas holiday) my weight loss stalled.  I was stuck, it just wasn’t moving.  So I did research.  Research is important in anything you are interested in.  You don’t go in blind, cause you don’t want to be blindsided. What I found was that by eating under my BMR I was essentially putting my body into starvation.  So when people say eat more to weigh less they aren’t joking. I have personally found that it has worked for me.

The other thing you have to consider is time.  If you have a lot to lose then don’t expect it to just instantly fall off.  It took time to put on, it’s going to take time to take it off.
It’s taken me a year to lose 13kg.  My son weighs 13, so I’ve lost him! I’m glad I’ve lost it slowly.  Because it means I’ve formed good habits, and those good habits will most likely continue.

So even though you want instant gratification, at the end of the day, it’s hard work and determination.  If you want it bad enough you just do it.
