Slow Cooker Porridge

May-Button-Clairey

You either love porridge or you hate it.

I use to love the instant packets, that was until I made porridge in the slow cooker. I was then converted.

This recipe is super easy, and best part about it is that you can add your own flavourings from the base recipe.

Slow Cooker Porridge

Recipe Type: Slow Cooker
Cuisine: Breakfast
Prep time: 5 mins
Cook time: 6 hours
Total time: 6 hours 5 mins
Serves: 2

Ingredients

  • 1 cup of Oats
  • 2 & 1/2 cups Water + Extra
  • Flavourings of your choice
  • Sweetener (optional)

Method

  1. Place your Slow Cooker on Low or setting 1.
  2. Fill with approx 1 inch of water.
  3. Place a glass/heatproof bowl (with a lid) into the slow cooker.
  4. Place all your ingredients into this bowl.
  5. Cook approx 6 hours or overnight

Now if you are wondering why I’m putting a bowl within a bowl, it’s so the porridge doesn’t stick to the side of the slow cooker and over cook and burn.  It makes for less cleaning up later.

You can also double the recipe to serve more.

With flavourings I like sultana’s and cranberries for sweetness.  Pumpkin seeds or sunflower seeds for crunch.

Experiment and find out what works for you. You may find that you like it only cooked for 4 hours, or you may find you love it cooked 12 hours.

Serve it with extra fruit or yoghurt or a splash of milk. Great for those winter-y days that are to come.

On cooler days, do you prefer a cold breakfast or a hot breakfast?
What did you have for breakfast today?
Have you ever done porridge in the slow cooker?

2021 update: I actually can no longer eat oats. I can have them only in very small doses. They give me incredible digestive upsets.

So while I no longer make this recipe, I’m keeping it up on the blog for those of you that do enjoy it.

  1. You know I have never had porridge ever and I never realized that until just now. But I am using my slow cooker more and more all the time, I think there should be a first time for everything, I’ll have to keep this in mind for in the future when I am in the mood for something more than just cold cereal:)
